NY:NY: CLAY
In Our Backyard
Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY
April 5 – June 5, 2015
An invitational exhibition as part of Clay Art Center’s year-long focus, In Our Backyard.

Curated by author, curator and NYU professor, Judith Schwartz, PhD, NY, NY: CLAY will showcase an eclectic representation of young, mid-career and mature artists and can be viewed as a sampling of the work of those who live, work, and build their careers in this quintessential urban environment of New York City.

NY, NY: CLAY is the second exhibition in a series of programs which comprise In Our Backyard, Clay Art Center’s year-long focus on the integral role clay has on art, architecture and design in New York. Five exhibitions feature artists who are working in the New York metropolitan area, are using clay as their mode of expression, and are making an impact in the field of contemporary art. In Our Backyard will also feature lectures, workshops, a symposium and a catalog encapsulating the year’s events.

About the exhibit, curator Judith Schwartz, PhD. states:

“NY, NY: CLAY is an eclectic representation of young mid-career and mature artists and can be viewed as a sampling of the work of those who live, work, and build their careers in this quintessential urban environment. New York never had ceramic gurus to whom students flocked, nor did it boast a dominant way of working with clay – such as Bay Area figurative or Funk, Pacific Northwest functional, or Los Angeles slick. New York has had no single conformity, no established way of doing things. The mixture of culture, food, music, theater, dance, street life, museums, galleries, architecture, and energy, commingles to add to the revitalization and regeneration of the city’s dynamism and it is reflected in the cross cultural expression of the work on view. New York is money, power, people – and with that, fortunately, taste, culture, and in the ceramic arts, some of the most dynamic individual expressions in clay today.”
