CONFRONTATIONAL CERAMICS Exhibition
Westchester Arts Council Art Gallery
White Plains, NY
October 3 - November 30, 2008
The Confrontational Ceramics exhibition was one of 68 venues that focused on clay during a Westchester county-wide celebration called “All Fired Up.” Judith Schwartz was one of the coordinators of the two-month long event and she curated two shows.
Confrontational Ceramics was an opportunity to showcase some of the 242 artists featured in her book with the same title published by AC Black, London, 2008.
The exhibition focused on the work of a group of artists who employ clay to expose human inequities. Making use of satire, caricature, parody, erotica, and the grotesque in their work, the artists question, criticize, jolt and lampoon hallowed traditions, providing critical social commentary as an intrinsic element of cultural discourse. The significance of the exhibition lies in the demonstration of the unique and non-traditional role clay now plays in illuminating the social condition.
